“Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by a passion, generated by a vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose”.
– Dr. Myles Munroe
Your purpose, what you were created for, is the ultimate reason for your existence.
As someone who has recently found his purpose, I strongly recommend that you move heaven and earth to discover yours. Because once you find it, nothing else will matter. You will discover passion you never knew you had. You will find ways to explore and develop yourself in single-minded pursuit of this ‘pearl of great price’. Your purpose is closely associated with your natural gifts and talents, and once discovered, you will want to spend as much time as possible developing them so that you can make the most of them. Finding your purpose has to be one of the great rewards of a life well lived. Once you find it, you will develop an almost obsessive desire to talk about it and use it to help others. If it does not benefit others, it is not your purpose. Our natural gifts and talents are not for our own exclusive use.
From personal evaluated experience, intentional reflection, brutally honest introspection, and careful observation over many years, I can safely say that finding my purpose has re-ignited me, taking no account of my age. As is well documented, I spent many years in the doldrums, exploring possibilities locally and internationally, trying my hand at many creative endeavours, some with a degree of success and others with poor outcomes. However, not one of them gave me a sense of satisfaction. I now realise that even if any one of those endeavours had gone on to become wildly successful, I would not have been a fulfilled human being. I would have become the owner or director of an enterprise with the primary purpose of profit. Making a lot of money may well have deprived me of the joy of finding one of the keys of a fulfilling life.
Throughout my detoured life journey, complete with many disappointments, I always retained a hope that someday I would find it, or that someday my talents would be ‘discovered’, much like a young actor waiting to be discovered by a famous director. I did not actually know what I was hoping for or looking for. I could not put my finger on it. I simply knew there was something about this life that I was not getting. I was restless and harboured a feeling of dissatisfaction, always searching and never finding.
Paul the Apostle encouraged young Timothy to “fan into flames the gift that is in you”. My search was made more challenging by not knowing exactly what I was searching for. I had often heard about ‘purpose’ and ‘calling’. I had heard of people who were in their calling. I spent many years wondering about my purpose without coming to any conclusion. Outside of my faith, I simply had no idea what my purpose was. When asked directly, I had no answer. Despite years of acquired ‘wisdom’ and knowledge, I had no answer. People expected me to have an answer, and perhaps I convinced a few people with my babbling, but deep down I knew that I did not know.
Just when I thought I had exhausted all options and almost accepting that finding it was out of my hands and out of my reach, I have come to realise that I am in my calling and walking in my purpose. This is December 2025, a week before Christmas. It has not been an easy year on many levels, but it has yielded this incredible gift. Now that I have found it, I know without any doubt what it is. It is difficult to describe in words something as intangible as a purpose. My purpose is unique to me, using the gifts, talents, experiences and wisdom accumulated over time. All of these are closely associated with the discovery, which has arrived after years of reflection and introspection. Much as I would love to share my purpose with others, the best I can do is to encourage them to seek their own. My deep desire is to share my enthusiasm, my passion, and my findings to add value to those around me. I don’t have a formula, but I can confidently declare that if you intentionally seek it, you will find it. There is also no timeframe or time limit. It can be found at any time, and it is never too late.
Finding your purpose makes sense of the past, gives clarity to the present, and direction to the future. This is quite a bold statement, but it nevertheless understates the feeling of wellbeing and fulfilment that having found my purpose brings. Suddenly life has changed from existence to meaningful, and time has become a precious commodity. There is an urgency about spreading the message of hope that no matter the circumstances, there is a way through. It is a commodity that provides a feeling of being propelled by some internal force, accelerating me towards a distant destination. To quote a modern term, I have discovered my ‘why’. It has provided me with a tool to become a better version of myself, to make a difference in my community, and created a burning desire to see people unlock their potential.
The purpose of this short exposé is to convince you that it is never too late to find this pot of gold and to encourage you not to abandon the search for it. You were created for a unique purpose which only you can accomplish. Not everybody is destined for fame and fortune, but everyone has a specific assignment in life. The primary ingredients to discovering your purpose are intentional, fearless reflection, and honest self-evaluation.
So, what is my purpose? It was always my desire to encourage people and help them overcome fears, imposed limitations, and disappointments, mostly because I have been faced with them and have had to learn to navigate them without losing hope. These lived and evaluated experiences, combined with my formal training, have become the foundation which I dare use to coach, teach and train. It is my purpose to help people, and leaders in particular, to unlock their potential, re-ignite their gifts, renew their hope, and help them become the best versions of themselves. It is a privilege which I do not take for granted and which I highly value.
